Summit Material LLC.
International Parent Company of Construction Material Factories
Role: Web Analyst/UX Designer
Team Project: Launch a tracking and operation analysis platform to monitor all sub-companies.
MVP Goal: Analyzing and designing the 2B dollar acquisition firm’s new digital platform, including creating an intranet, customer portal, mobile apps, and marketing websites.
Challenge: The company never had a digital platform. The construction industry was rated as the slowest to integrate technology. It was also one of the most dangerous occupations, with high work-related injuries and death. A new digital platform would increase communications, create mobile safety tracking forms, and provide real-time data from top-level management to customers.
Approach:
1. Meet with key stakeholders: My first step was to sit down and have him walk me through his vision for the company, including new digital products.
2. Review available company data and conduct missing user research: We met with office workers, field workers, and executives. We observed their day, what was essential, and their pain points.
3. Competitive Analysis: Who are our competitors in the same industry? What is their technology? What can we learn and do better? Once the bigger picture was fleshed out, the team focused on individual digital products.
4. Prioritize Requirements: What are the top business and user needs? The first was CAPEX safety forms. Safety was vital in all roles. Factories and job sites had to be up to code or someone could get injured. The biggest improvement was filling out the checklist form on a mobile device. Field workers did not have laptops and were using clipboards. The paper forms had a high risk of getting lost and damaged.
