Summit Material – Investment Firm

Web Analyst/UX Designer

Goal: Analyzing and designing the 2B dollar acquisition firm’s new digital platform, including creating an intranet, customer portal, mobile apps, and marketing websites.

Challenge: The company never had a digital platform. The construction industry was rated as the slowest to integrate technology. It was also one of the most dangerous occupations with high work-related injuries and death. A new digital platform would increase communications, create mobile safety tracking forms, and provide real-time data from top-level management to customers.

Approach: This was the first attempt to build a digital platform for the 8-year-old company. The V.P. of Technology was a new position and hire. My first step was to sit down and have him walk me through his vision for the company, including new digital products. The second step was to meet with office workers, field workers and executives. I observed their day, noted what was important and what was a headache. The third step was to research how other competitors in the same industry built their own digital platform. Also, what they learned and modified. Once the bigger picture was fleshed out, the team focused on individual digital products. The first was CAPEX safety forms. Safety was key in all roles. Factories and job sites had to be up to code or someone could get injured. We found the biggest improvement was filling out the checklist form on a mobile device. Field workers did not have laptops and were using clipboards. The paper forms had a high risk of getting lost and damaged.

What I did with my team:

  • Researching and producing a competitive analysis
  • Interpreting website analytics and available user demographics
  • Conducting interviews and observation of potential users
  • Presenting UX research and digital strategy to corporate stakeholders
  • Creating journey maps and wireframes
  • Creating high-fidelity mockups for the customer portal using Microsoft Power Bi
  • Writing presentations for stakeholders and user-friendly training guides on released digital products
  • Creating a new brand for the company’s digital products, called Summit Connect
  • Implementing W3C Standards and best practices for all digital products
  • Coding design with CSS, HTML, and Javascript
  • Conducting cross-browser testing and troubleshooting
  • Working directly with developers, other designers and content writers to implement design changes
  • Defining and gathering requirements for projects
  • Conducting meetings with management, digital teams and corporations stakeholders on project status
